“Variations on Paganini’s Theme for Left Hand” op. 1
Paganini’s notorious Caprice No. 24 has always intrigued virtuoso composers, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Lutosławski, who decided to write variations. But none of them had used this theme to write a variation for left hand. When I was young, I measured myself against it. I wrote this theme, a variation for left hand only. The rendition was so brilliant that some colleagues urged me to write more. I composed eight variations in all.
